About Köppen
Köppen shows weather and climate in a way you can get your hands on. Every scene is rendered solely from measurements, reanalyses and model data: no illustration, no stock photo, nothing made up. You turn the camera, drag the timeline, pick your location and see what the data shows.
What you’ll find here
- Scenes: 35 interactive scenes in eight series, from the shifting climate since 1940 through windstorm Lothar 1999 and Winter Storm Uri 2021 to the polar vortex and the seasonal forecast. Some are free, some can be previewed, and all are open to members.
- Membership: one price for all scenes, monthly or annually, cancel at any time.
- Airdentity: At airdentity.com you can assign names to high- and low-pressure systems, which then appear on maps and in weather videos. Airdentity is part of Köppen.
The name
Wladimir Köppen (1846–1940) classified the Earth’s climate zones. His classification by temperature and precipitation is still used today, including in our climate atlas, which shows how these zones have been shifting since 1940.
Who’s behind it
Köppen is made by Jan Schenk (Klimatologische Beratung) in Berlin. The scenes are built from freely available data from major weather and climate services; you’ll find which ones under Data sources and on every scene page.
